Monitoring symptoms and how quickly they progress is imperative. If not it could kill you. My body has always dealt with infections well and I have been bitten by many a domestic and wild animal. Even though I have been bitten by cats many times it only took one deep puncture wound. I went from a swollen thumb to a swollen hand that looked liked a red balloon within 24 hours, and had a red streak up my arm going directly to the chest. I was infected by a very virulent type of bacteria that my body probably had never been exposed to before and had not developed any antibodies and resistance to. If not for the IV antibiotics in the hospital I might not be writing this. They are overused and I would rather rely on my own immune system but in this case the antibiotics were a life saver.
