Hi Eddie,
The question of why organisms age and the evolution of aging is a
highly active and open question in modern biology. There is plenty of
active debate concerning the question of whether aging is an adaptive
trait (for whatever reason) or an inevitable consequence of
accumulated damage or genomic mutations ... or both, or something else
:)
However, unfortunately anthropomorphisms frequently creep in, when a
biological system is said to have been "programmed" it is a lazy man's
way of saying that the system evolved via natural selection. While
many people chose to disregard this theory (for predominantly
religious reasons), this is certainly what is meant by the vast
majority of the biological science community.
hope that helps
