Not so much "who" did the programming, but what did. Evolution. :)
As for Cuba, yes there may appear to be plenty of 1950s era American
models around. Although there aren't nearly as many as pictures of the
place would have you believe. Most of the cars there now are new model
European, Japanese and Korean cars. There are more old Russian cars
than old American ones. The only thing American about most of the old
50's cars are the bodies. Everything else, from the engines, to the
tires, to the exhaust systems, are all jury-rigged Russian (and now
more and more commonly Chinese) parts.
So yes Cuban mechanics are ingenious, no doubt about that. But even
they couldn't keep those old American cars running on much of the
original equipment. We can't yet substitute quite so many parts in
human bodies as we can in cars. The biomechanics are a little more
complicated. But with care, attention (and perhaps a little cosmetic
surgery, or a lot if you're Cher) we can keep the body going and
looking presentable for a good long time.
