IMAGINE for a moment.. that there is a real trial in the planning.
Charges have been filed by the district attorney.
Now before I go on, you will either suspend your disbelief, or get very little out of this writing... so consider watching the movie...I'm sending to you . It's rather brief.
The defendant is known as FEELINGS. The charge is criminal fraud.
Feelings is arrested, and not allowed to post bail. The judge determines that FEELINGS is both a flight risk and a danger to the community.
The jury is picked and the trial begins.
At the opening of the trial, the prosecuting atty, delivers a stinging indictment to the jury.
Either he is a heck of a good actor, or he's really convinced of his message. Personally, logic tells me that he's telling the truth.
Feelings has done terrible harm to many citizens in our community. Feelings has been given a position of trust and while at times is reliable, has often and maliciously misled many of our good citizens and caused them harm.
The multiple charges are read to the jury.. Feelings never looks up.
Feelings has lied and misled countless people...leading them to :
believe that drugs solve problems
drunkenness will make your life better
finding a one night stand will get your life in order and make bad stuff go away
what you don't look at can't hurt you.
If it's too good to be true, maybe you'll just be lucky
buying lottery tickets makes more sense than paying the mortgage..
Punching the next door neighbors lights OUT is the only way to quiet his dog/car/motorcycle. ...
buying that new set of 800 dollar wheels will really make me happy
The list goes on and on and the prosecutor sets about to describe several severe infractions by FEELINGS under each category.
In his summation he says... "In order to be brief, I've left out 97% of the infractions committed by FEELINGS. A printed list is available and we are considering bringing these charges as well.
The defense attorney immediately begins to play on the jurys feelings of guilt. The feelings are powerful, and they begin to sway... til one of them says "HEY we wouldn't get away with such fraud! What is this? This guy wants us to be stupid!
The defense attorney is a master of manipulation ( in fact a relative of FEELINGS ) and sees the jury drifting away and hardening against him. He pulls several tricks out of his hat and none of them work.
Can it be, has he lost this jury? How could it happen? He has this sudden awareness that he has lost and his client is about to get screwed. In the middle of his summation he pauses and speaks with his client.
"you are about to be convicted, and the harder we fight, the worse it will be for you. They have seen through us and this fight is done. Take a plea... we'll do what we can for you... but you have been caught and there is not much to be done."
FEELINGS, accepts the inevitable and there is a brief recess in the judges chambers.
In the end, Feelings is partly muzzled.
The judge speaks. You will hence forth request permission to speak. Each time you speak, you will have to justify your assertions to your arch enemy... FACTS.
But your honor, the FEELINGS family Hates the FACTS.
EXACTLY you slimy 7098703%$&^( %&^$%^$&* (*)_ NOW GET THE HELL OUT OF MY CHAMBERS BEFORE I THROW YOUR ASS TO THE JURY!!!
So, they agree to the sentence, and feelings is led out.
He is shamed in public, heavily fined, and has FACTS assigned to him for the rest of his life.
Of course, FEELINGS has relatives.. who are similarly schooled.. so we will just have to continue to rely on The FACTS.... always.
For the moment, this court is dismissed.
Epilogue:
If you are not FEELING convinced, you didn't use the FACTS.
